Graduate Professional Programs: Master of Engineering (MEng)

What is a Master of Engineering Degree?

A Master of Engineering (MEng) degree is a professional course work-based degree offered at Western University to students who have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent degree from an accredited university. The MEng program offers a course-based degree that may be a combination of course work and a project, or course work only. Students in the MEng program do not require a supervisor; the Associate Chair of Graduate Professional Programs is assigned to oversee the MEng program and assist MEng students throughout their course of study.

The Civil & Environmental Engineering MEng programs are structured to assist qualified engineers in the advancement of their professional careers and to provide students with the skills necessary to address key technological challenges.

We are currently offering the following MEng programs in the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering:

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department offers a course-based MEng program: 10 courses required, and a project-based MEng program: 8 courses required plus a research project.

In both the course-based and project-based MEng program, 2 of the courses completed will be professional courses, and the remaining courses will be technical courses.

The duration of the Civil & Environmental Engineering MEng program is full-time continuous study for one year (3 terms).

Applicants to the MEng program choose from one of our four areas of specialization: Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Structural and Infrastructural Engineering, and Smart Cities.   • Smart Cities (beginning Summer 2025; Summer term intake only): By 2050, 70 percent of the world's population is projected to reside in urban areas, and as cities grow, there is a rising demand for professionals with specialized knowledge and skills in smart city technologies and solutions. The Smart Cities Master of Engineering degree program will offer interdisciplinary courses and integrate expertise from diverse fields such as infrastructure, transportation, and structural engineering with artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and advanced computing. Through integrating expertise from civil engineering, AI, and other relevant fields, the program will equip students with the technical skills and knowledge needed to address the challenges of smart cities such as smart infrastructure operation, efficient resource management, and data-driven decision-making.

The Faculty of Engineering offers a Combined Masters of Engineering (MEng) Degree and Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Engineering Leadership and Innovation. It is a 4-term (16 month) program where students concurrently take courses in both the MEng and the GDip programs.

Students registered in this option must complete the requirements for both the MEng and the GDip programs.  Once completed, students receive both an MEng Degree and a Graduate Diploma.

Students registered in any technical field of the MEng program in the Faculty of Engineering can opt for this option as this option does not affect or alter the technical course requirements of a particular MEng technical field.

Program Structure (Combined option):

Students are required to complete 8 technical courses or 6 technical courses and a project (as per the MEng program in which they are registered). Students are also required to complete 6 professional courses (3 core courses and 3 elective courses).
