*Accelerated Masters Program

Accelerated Master of Engineering Science (MESc) Program

The Accelerated Master of Engineering Science (MESc) program is designed to encourage outstanding and research-motivated students to complete the MESc degree through one extra year of study beyond their BESc program.

This program is offered to current 3rd year Western Engineering students, and in order to be accepted into the Accelerated MESc, an applicant must have at least 78% cumulative average based on 2nd and 3rd years of the undergraduate program. For dual-degree students, the admission average is calculated based on 2nd and 3rd years of the Engineering program.

Program format

Applicant must identify a supervisor during 3rd year, and begin his/her research project in supervisor's lab (typically through NSERC USRA or Dean' s Research Award) in the Summer before the beginning of 4th year.

During the 4th year of undergraduate program:

  • Take one graduate level course as a substitute for a 4th year technical elective.
  • Complete rest of the courses and other requirements for the BESc program.
  • May take (optional) one graduate course as an overload, to be counted as a credit in the graduate degree.
  • Maintain a cumulative average of 78% based on 3rd and 4th years of the undergraduate program.

Starting the MESc program in May (immediately after completing BESc degree):

  • Take two graduate courses (if took the overload graduate course in the 4th year)
  • Take three graduate courses (if no overload graduate course in the 4th year)
  • Complete research and thesis

How to Apply and Requirements

  • Interested students must complete an online application for graduate studies (Accelerated Masters program) no later than August 1st prior to beginning their 4th year of study.
  • Students who work in the summer prior to beginning their 4th year of study through the summer research program in Engineering (NSERC USRA, Dean's Award or Summer Research Award) are eligible to apply.
  • Students must also register in the appropriate 4th year courses as described in the table above.
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students are all eligible to apply

Enrolling in Graduate courses as a 4th Year Undergraduate student

While you are an undergraduate student, you must work with the Undergraduate Coordinator in ECE on all course enrollment matters.

MESc to Doctoral Program Transfer

Both the ECE Transfer Request and the SGPS Transfer Request Forms must be completed and submitted to the Department. These forms are located on the ECE Forms page.

Requirements

  • In order to request a transfer to the PhD program an MESc student must submit the request prior to beginning their 4th term of enrolment.
  • An average of 85% across the courses taken during the MESc program is required to be eligible to transfer to the PhD program
  • MESc to PhD transfer students must take 8 graduate level courses to complete the degree requirements. A Maximum of 2 courses 2 MAY be waived, with ECE Graduate Committee approval.

Thesis Exam Information

You will complete the MESc program once you have successfully defended your thesis. Please note that you will also be expected to give a public lecture on your thesis topic just ahead of your exam.

Please see  the full SGPS Thesis Guide for information on formatting, timelines, preliminary submission, exam requirements and final submission.

Support

Request for Academic Consideration

If, on medical or compassionate or other legitimate grounds, you are unable to meet your academic responsibilities, i.e., unable to write term tests, quizzes, project reports or final examinations or complete other required components of the course (e.g. project(s), presentation(s), case studies, or any other activity assigned as required by the course instructor), then you can request for accommodation.

To request accommodation, complete the Request for Academic Consideration Form and submit it along with the supporting documents via Kuali, to the Associate Dean (Graduate) Office. The accommodation request must be submitted either in advance or no later than one week after the date of course activity for which the accommodation is sought.

You should understand that academic accommodation will not be granted automatically on request. You must demonstrate that there are compelling medical or compassionate or other legitimate grounds that can be documented before academic accommodation will be considered.

The Associate Dean’s Office will review the accommodation request and convey the decision to the student and copy, Course Instructor and the Graduate Office of student’s home department. Note that the confidential information related to the accommodation is not shared with the Instructor and the Departmental Graduate Office.

If the accommodation request is approved, the Course Instructor has to convey the accommodation arrangement to the student and provide a copy to the Departmental Graduate Office.

Career Development

Western Engineering's Career Services

The Western Engineering Career Services team supports the Faculty of Engineering in its goal of providing the best student experience through experiential learning opportunities. Students have the opportunity to participate in Co-op which ensures a seamless transition from student life to employment and their career. Western Engineering offers both an undergraduate and graduate co-op program to its students. Co-op provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning in the workplace through hands-on experience, while building a professional network and earning a salary. In addition, research shows that participating in a co-op work term has a positive impact on students' grades when they return to their studies.

Western Engineering's Career Services engage students in self-discovery and assist them with career planning, career exploration, and career development to help meet their career goals. Our team offers one-to-one virtual or in-person career appointments where students can get support on resume building, and interview skills, as well as a wide variety of career-focused workshops throughout the academic year.
