  1. IEEE Standards Association Working Group Recognition Award for contribution to the development of IEEE Standard 2800-2022 ‘IEEE Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) Interconnecting with Associated Transmission Electric Power Systems’, 2022.

  2. 2021 IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Nari Hingorani FACTS Award

    “for advancing FACTS controllers application in education, research, and professional society, and for developing an innovative STATCOM technology utilizing PV solar farms”
    This is the most prestigious award in “Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)” technology. Rajiv Varma is the second Canadian to receive this award in its 22 year history.

  3. Elected as Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE), 2021.

    His citation reads as below:

    “Dr. Rajiv Varma is an internationally recognized researcher, inventor, and leader in FACTS, solar and wind power systems. Among his pioneering contributions has been a major ground-breaking utility-implemented award-winning technology, PV-STATCOM, that enables solar PV plants to provide FACTS functionalities at one-tenth cost of FACTS themselves. Dr. Varma’s significant contributions include 13 granted and 14 pending international patents, 180 publications and highly acclaimed Wiley/IEEE Press book on FACTS. He has made exemplary contributions to training of utility engineers, system planners, manufacturers, academics, and researchers, worldwide. He is an outstanding educator and has been honoured with numerous university teaching excellence awards.”

  7. Hydro One Research Chair in Power Systems Engineering” from 2012 to the culmination of the Chair program in 2015. Hydro One is the largest transmission and distribution utility in Ontario, Canada.

  10. Awarded "Hind Rattan (translated "Jewel of India") Award 2014" for Outstanding Services, Achievements and Contributions in my area. This Award is conferred annually to select members of the worldwide Indian diaspora - Non Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin by the NRI Welfare Society of India (http://www.nriwelfaresociety.com) at a ceremony at its yearly conference, held since 1981. This award was presented on the eve of Republic Day of India (January 26), 2014 in New Delhi.

  11. Awarded "Bharat Gaurav (translated 'Pride of India') Award 2014" for Meritorious Services, Outstanding Performance and Remarkable Role in my area. This award is conferred annually by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS) (http://www.globalfriendshipday.org) on personalities in India and abroad, who have made outstanding contributions in their personalized fields including science and technology, and education. The award was presented during IIFS's Global Friendship Day on January 9, 2014 in New Delhi.
