Novus aligns with the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory

Western Engineering News | October 1, 2012

The Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL) at Western University has partnered with Novus Environmental Inc. to offer a full range of building design services to clients, including air quality services.

Novus Environmental Inc. (Novus) specializes in the fields of atmospheric science, acoustics, and human health. Novus principals have considerable experience working with industry, institutions and other clients to address their air quality and noise assessment needs and regulatory approvals.

“The alignment of Novus Environmental and the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory brings complementary expertise to the evaluation of designs and mitigation solutions for the complex environmental issues that face architects, engineers, owners and developers,” said Peter King, director at BLWTL.

“Combining Novus’ regulatory and industry experience with the state of the art facilities and resources at the BLWTL will allow a more complete service to industry in this area than in the past,” he adds.

The BLWTL has pioneered various studies of wind effects on buildings and structures, and the development of wind tunnel modelling techniques and analysis procedures. The BLWTL group has vast experience at generating innovative solutions to complex wind engineering problems, including the dispersion of air contaminants around buildings in complex settings.

Novus and the BLWTL will work together to provide assessments of:

  • Tracer Gas Dispersion (exhaust re-entrainment);
  • Pedestrian Wind Comfort;
  • Structural Wind Loading and Aeroelastic Effects; and
  • Wind-induced Noise (aeroacoustics).

“Our alliance is a natural extension of the expertise offered by both firms, uniting the structural effects of wind loading with building design for air quality, acoustics, noise and structural vibration,” Novus says in a release. “The amalgamation of our services with physical testing capabilities bolsters Novus’ goal of harmonizing the natural and built environments and we are proud and excited to be working with the world-leading wind engineering group at the BLWTL.”

Some successful collaborations between the BLWTL and Novus include:

  • Forensics Services and Coroner’s Complex, Toronto, ON;
  • University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, Pittsburgh, PA;
  • Pan / Parapan American Games Athletes’ Village Complex, Toronto, ON;
