The GE Digital Energy Innovation Lab, in Western’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, officially opened its doors November 18, 2009. The lab will be used to improve the resiliency and responsiveness of the electrical grid and enable greater connectivity and increased security for utilities and consumers.

Professor Margaritis elected Fellow, Engineers Canada
Engineers Canada, a national licensing body that represents 180,000 professional engineers, created the Engineers Canada Fellowship in 2007 to honour individuals who have given
outstanding service to the engineering profession. One of the most recent individuals selected to receive this honour is Western’s chemical
and biochemical engineering professor Argyrios Margaritis.

Western researchers part of new centres of excellence
The government is investing $125 million in Networks of Centres of Excellence as well as Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research to help researchers develop their findings into new practical, applied and marketable solutions. Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering professor and Director of the Chemical Reactor Engineering Centre at Western, Hugo DeLasa, is part of a new network to develop technologies necessary to “decarbonise” fossil fuel production and utilization.
