Two Western Engineering students receive Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation awards
The criteria for the CEMF engineering scholarships, at first glance, may not seem overly stringent. Canadian women applying must be leaders, volunteers, involved in numerous community activities and willing to go out of their way to inspire others. And yet, the combination of these characteristics results in remarkable women who shine among their peers. Among these

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Scholarships awarded to two Western Engineering students
CME scholarships are awarded annually to students who are completing a 12 to 16 month industry internship in the manufacturing sector, and entering their final year of studies. Two Western Engineering students have received CME scholarships this year: Stephen Haley and Myrna Johanna Sanchez.

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the licensing body for professional engineers in the province, installed
Western Engineering alumna, Catherine Karakatsanis, as its 90th President during its annual general meeting.

Top Canadian fundraiser bids farewell to Western
One of Canada's best fundraisers is getting set to leave The University of Western Ontario to take over the reins as President and CEO of Toronto's SickKids Foundation.
Ted Garrard has served as Western’s Vice-President (External), overseeing fundraising, alumni relations and communications, since 1996. He leaves June 30 and begins his new job on July 6.

Western on shortlist for two Canada Excellence Research Chairs
With a value of $10 million each, The University of Western Ontario has been honoured with the news that it may be in line to receive two of Canada’s largest and most prestigious research grants, including one for Environmentally Friendly Processing of Canadian Petroleum Resources and Biofuels.

Western promotes research at Discovery conference
Key research areas at The University of Western Ontario were put on display at Discovery 09, the annual conference of Ontario Centres of Excellence helping to forge partnerships with Ontario business and research communities. Two projects with Western affiliations were named as finalists for the Ontario Centres of Excellence 2009 Mind to Market Award – StormFisher Biogas and Transform Automotive.

Bird wind tunnel lands on campus
While most migratory birds will be skyward when heading south this fall, a handful of their feathered friends will call the climate-controlled confines Advanced Facility for Avian Research (AFAR) their winter home. Western has assembled one of the largest groups of integrative avian biologists in Canada to research how birds respond to climate change. This project combines faculty members from three Faculties at Western, including Gregory Kopp from Western’s Civil and Environmental Engineering department.

Lars Rehmann joined the Department
of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering as an Assistant Professor
in the area of green energy and alternate energy on May 1.
Joanne Lemon has returned to work
from an extended leave. Joanne returned to her role as Graduate
Coordinator in the Department of Civil & Environmental
Engineering on April 13.
Staff Changes
Martha Fediw joined the Undergraduate Services Office as an Academic Counsellor, effective April 20. In her new role, Martha will be the Academic Counsellor for undergraduate students within the Departments of Chemical & Biochemical and Electrical & Computer Engineering (including Software Engineering).
Western Engineering Bids Farewell
Jim Collard, Stores Coordinator,
Financial Services, retired May 1 after 20 years of service.
Bert Verhagen, Laboratory Supervisor
in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, will
officially retire on June 30, however due to an accumulation
of time accrued and vacation Bert’s last day was May 29.

Distinguished Lecture - George Pinder
A Western graduate who was an expert witness in a complex U.S.
legal case involving water contamination alleged to have caused
cancer in children - a situation portrayed in the 1998 movie
