In Memoriam - Alan Davenport
Engineering professor emeritus Alan Davenport, whose love of flying and fascination with the wind led to many scientific breakthroughs, has died at the age of 76 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.

CBE Plant Design team to compete in International Design Competition
The Plant Design team from CBE 4497 has secured a spot in the final
three at the International Design Competition to be held at World
Chemical Engineering Congress in Montreal next month.

Eric Savory awarded an International Research Chair
Professor Eric Savory, Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, has been awarded the Region Pays de La Loire, International Research Chair position to work for 12 months at the Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN) in France, within the Equipe Dynamique de L'Atmosphere Habitee. Professor Savory started working in this capacity July 1, 2009, during his sabbatical leave.
Western projects attract $17.5 million in CFI funding
The world's first hexagonal wind tunnel, home to research that will protect us from storms and harness the power of wind, will be built at The University of Western Ontario, supported by funding announced today from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The project, led by Western Engineering professor Horia Hangan, received $9.5 million toward the total cost of $23.6 million.

London Free Press business reporter Hank Daniszewski profiled London’s most innovative research projects in a series entitled, “Bright Ideas." Western Engineering researchers Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens, George Nakhla, Ajay Ray, and Jess Zhu were featured in the series.

Western earns two CREATE projects
When The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced the first wave of grants under the Canadian government's new Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program, two of the 20 successful projects were based at The University of Western Ontario, including one in Engineering.

Western Engineering Welcomes
Clare Robinson joined Western Engineering in the Civil & Environmental Engineering department as an Assistant Professor in the area of water resources and international development. She officially began July 1 and can be found in SEB 3041, ext. 80974.
Jan Millette joined Western Engineering on July 22 as the new Payroll Assistant in the Dean’s Office. Jan comes to us from Robarts Research Institute where she worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Business Development Office since 2007. Jan can be found in SEB 2003C, ext. 81154.
Emily Walpole assisting in Dean’s Office
Emily Walpole who worked in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering as the Undergraduate Assistant while Rachel Dekker was on maternity leave,
will continue working with Western Engineering until August 31
to assist the Office of the Dean and the Department of
Chemical & Biochemical Engineering. She will work in the CBE department office most mornings helping with undergraduate and department activities. She will then
spend most afternoons in the Dean’s Office assisting with projects from Finance/Stores, External Services and Human Resources.

Western Engineering’s alumni list grew by 215 members this past June as the Class of 2009 graduated from The University of Western Ontario on June 10.
