Q&A with Abby Di Laudo

As someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries.

Can you talk about your extra-curricular activities at Western? Why would you encourage students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at Western Engineering?

Reflecting on my experience at Western thus far, becoming involved in extra-curricular activities has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Joining clubs such as Women in Engineering and the Western Engineering Toboggan Team has not only allowed me to form lasting friendships but has also provided me with opportunities to enrich my education beyond the classroom. For example, last year I was able to travel to Kelowna, BC to compete in an engineering design competition!

Do you remember when you decided you wanted to pursue engineering? What sparked your interest?

I developed an appreciation for math and physics in high school, which is when I first considered pursuing engineering. Once I looked into the field more, I was drawn to the way engineers solve challenges and directly improve people’s lives. Additionally, as someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries. This wide range of opportunities solidified my interest in engineering.

How do you manage school-related stress?

To manage school-related stress, I prioritize finding a balance between my academic schedule and activities that feed my non-academic interests. For example, I participate in soccer and hockey intramurals each week. I have also created a list of “non-negotiables” that keep me grounded and able to handle a busy schedule more effectively. For me, this includes getting enough sleep and engaging in regular physical activity. Being proactive in setting up weekly schedules and to-do lists has helped me to be able to prioritize my time in this way.

What is your favourite quote?

"What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." - Jane Goodall

Favourite study spot on campus?

DaVinci’s Cafe! Located in the Spencer Engineering Building, DaVinci’s is my go-to place to study with friends between classes while grabbing a bite to eat.

What is success to you?

While this may be a cliche, I genuinely believe that success lies in the journey rather than the destination.
For me, success does not hinge solely on a single accomplishment. Rather, it is the experiences and
lessons accumulated along the way that truly stand as the greatest achievement. This perspective has
allowed me to appreciate the present and approach the future with a mindset of continuous growth.
