Q&A with Adham Awad

As someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries.

Why Western Engineering?

When applying to various universities across Ontario, Western Engineering stood out to me primarily for the plethora of dual degree options, pairing an Engineering discipline with Business (Ivey), Biomedical, Artificial Intelligence, and more! I was also drawn to Western Engineering due to its anticipated familial community, where an emphasis is placed on the notion of, “We’re all in this together!”

What do you do in your spare time?

When I am not studying or doing academic-related tasks, I enjoy playing, watching, and coaching soccer. I also engage in other physical activities at the Recreational Center at Western, such as Volleyball, Swimming, and Gym. When I am not doing these activities, I will be playing the piano or Saxophone, going on walks, or trying out food places across London!

What is a fun fact about yourself?

A fun fact about myself is that I have been to every continent in the world and visited 12 countries. Some of the most memorable places I have been to include Egypt, South Africa, Greece, Italy, UAE, and Mexico!

Can you talk about your experiential learning experiences (co-op, internship, ELI, PEME, Global and Intercultural Engagement Honour etc.)?

Recently, I have had the opportunity to be a Group Head Soccer Coach. This experience has allowed me to enhance my leadership skills, as well as my intrapersonal communication. I have deeply enjoyed this learning experience and strongly recommend an experience to any future student where they can grow and enhance their qualities in a field of their interest.

Can you share study tips for current/future students?

Pre-read, pre-read, pre-read. A crucial part of university learning that I quickly discovered is that pre-reading course material, particularly the night before a lecture, will have an immense impact on your learning. Instead of struggling to absorb information, lectures became comprehensive review sessions, where I was simply confirming the information I had already analyzed. Once again, pre-read, pre-read, pre-read!

Can you talk about your residence experience?

As a London local from the high school Saint Andre Bessette, I lived off-campus for my first year. Although initially hesitant to be distant from campus, I quickly realized that I am not limited to any of the encouraging activities present at Western Engineering and that there are many resources provided to Off-Campus students to excel in their daily lives.
