Q&A with Behzad Karai
I would encourage students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at Western because it allows for them to not only network, but learn more about a future career they may want to pursue.

Do you remember when you decided you wanted to pursue engineering? What sparked your interest?
Prior to entering my second year of high school I had chosen computer engineering as one of my electives, however, I was on the fence about being an engineer as I was unsure if it was the field of study I wanted to pursue. However, after completing the course I was intrigued by engineering and was told by my teacher that I should pursue further studies in the subject area as I excelled at it. Hence, my teacher and the way he taught the course was what sparked my interest in engineering.
How do you manage school-related stress?
I manage school-related stress by ensuring that I balance my school work along with my social life. Although it is important that I am on top of all my coursework, participating in extracurricular activities and socializing with others gives me a break from stressing about school. Furthermore, socializing with others allows me to meet like-minded people who are facing the same problems I face on a daily basis.
What is your favourite quote?
“Be Yourself; Everyone Else is Already Taken” - Oscar Wilde. This quote speaks to me the most because in our ever-changing world I believe it is important for everyone to be themselves. By displaying your own personality, you make the world a better and more interesting place. Hence, this quote is my favourite as it is inspirational and reminds us to never hide our personality.
Favourite study spot on campus?
My favourite study spot on campus is the Amit Chakma Engineering Building (ACEB) because the design of the building is extremely intriguing to me. The glass architecture on the building gives the outside an acrylic look and makes the interior much brighter. Furthermore, as there is a lot of seating area located throughout building I don’t need to worry about finding a seat.
Can you talk about your extra-curricular activities at Western (clubs, teams, volunteer work, outreach activities, athletics, etc.)? Why would you encourage students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at Western Engineering?
Being a first-year student I have yet to join any clubs, however, I am enrolled in flag football intramurals and look forward to participating in more club activities at Western throughout the year. I would encourage students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at Western because it allows for them to not only network, but learn more about a future career they may want to pursue.
What is success to you?
Success has different meanings for different people. To me success is a state of mind that is only achieved when someone is happy. While others may state that in order to be successful you need to make millions of dollars, I believe that if you are making millions of dollars, but unhappy then you are not successful. Hence, my definition of success is being satisfied and having no regrets for the choices you made in life.
