Q&A with Emely Estevez Perez

As someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries.

Why Western Engineering?

I chose Western Engineering for its balance between academics and student life. I remember scrolling through all the clubs and activities they had to offer, feeling instantly drawn to C.S.O., S.A.L.S.A., and WiE. Knowing I’d find a welcoming and diverse community sealed the deal for me. And yes, I joined all three clubs in my first year — and no, I have absolutely no regrets!

What do you do in your spare time?

I’ve recently developed a passion for plants, and during my free time, I make it a priority to take care of them. It takes patience and consistency, but I find comfort in taking responsibility for their well-being. I’ve found myself appreciating even the smallest changes, like a new leaf or a bit of extra growth. It’s comforting to watch them grow as I do.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

A fun fact about me is that I love to dance. I grew up in the Dominican Republic, where I practiced folkloric dance, traditionally known as Perico Ripiao. When I moved to Canada, I joined a triple-threat class, and by high school, I was part of all seven dance teams my school had to offer. I enjoy dance styles such as jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary, but salsa and bachata are my top two.

Can you talk about your experiential learning experiences?

Last summer, I gained hands-on experience working at a construction site in the Dominican Republic, guided by the head management engineer. This role offered me a comprehensive understanding of site management, quality control, and project leadership. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, which has deepened my appreciation for civil engineering and the skills required to excel in it.

Can you share study tips for current/future students?

Top study tips: stay organized, find a study group, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Classes can sometimes feel overwhelming, so keeping track of assignments and due dates with a calendar app can make a big difference. Finding a study group was key to maintaining my motivation — having friends who can relate and support you is a must. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help! At Western Engineering, teamwork and collaboration are key, so rest assured there’s always someone willing to help.

Can you talk about your residence experience?

I lived in Med-Syd during my first year, and I loved every part of it. I originally wanted O-Hall, so when I got Med-Syd (my seventh choice), I was a bit disappointed. But within a week, I was so grateful to have ended up where I did. The spirit was unmatched, the student leaders were amazing, and my floor became like a second family (shoutout to ST1!). Engineering can be tough but coming back to a residence where we all looked out for each other made my first year truly fulfilling.
