Q&A with Gabriella Mastronardi

One of the reasons I chose Western was the general first year, which allowed me to explore different engineering streams before committing. I’m so happy I made that decision, and I’m really enjoying second-year Mechanical Engineering.

Why Western Engineering?

I chose Western Engineering after visiting the campus during one of the open house events. What stood out to me was the welcoming environment provided by both the students and faculty. I was impressed by how passionate everyone was about their program and how informative they were to prospective students. Additionally, I fell in love with the campus and all the amenities Western offers to enhance the university experience.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy going for walks and runs. Recently, I discovered the trail along the Thames River and have been loving my evening walks there as a way to unwind after a long day of classes.

What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?

I had an amazing experience during my orientation week as a first-year student. Coming to Western, I didn’t know anyone in the Engineering program, which made me nervous about meeting people. Thankfully, O-Week provided great opportunities to connect with other students and helped prepare me for my first day of classes. By the end of the week, I had met others with similar schedules, and we became friends throughout the semester.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

One of the reasons I chose Western was the general first year, which allowed me to explore different engineering streams before committing. Originally, I planned to study Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, but quickly realized that wasn’t for me. I discovered a passion for Mechanical Engineering through my first-year courses and decided to pursue that discipline instead. I’m so happy I made that decision, and I’m really enjoying my second-year Mechanical Engineering courses so far.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

My favorite TV show is Gilmore Girls. I rewatch it every year as the school season begins, and it helps me get into the fall spirit!

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

The person I admire most is my mom. Without her encouragement, I’m not sure I would have pursued engineering, let alone chosen Western Engineering. As an engineer herself, she understood the challenges of the field and constantly reminded me that I was capable of meeting those challenges, even when I doubted myself. In the future, I hope to achieve the same level of professional success while balancing a busy lifestyle, as she has exemplified throughout my life.
