Why Western Engineering?

I was drawn to the option of pursuing a dual degree in biomedical along with a discipline of my choice. The program’s structure allows you to explore both disciplines thoroughly while increasing job opportunities after graduation. The long-term and summer co-op programs are well designed and Western provides a lot of support to help you get the role you like. Additionally, the diverse array of student clubs and design teams are perfect for exploring different interests and making new friends.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love playing sports, especially volleyball and badminton, both of which I played on my high school team. I also enjoy playing video games, hanging out with friends, and reading books.

What was your orientation week experience like as a first-year student?

During the week, I learned how to find my way around campus, who I should talk to if I am feeling overwhelmed, and my go-to order at the Spoke’s kitchen (it's the burrito bowl). It is encouraging to know that everyone in the first year is in the same situation, and a support system is inherently built into the student experience. The Sophs are an amazing help as well, providing guidance and mentorship beyond just orientation week.

Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?

Taking part in Go ENG Girl in my youth showed me just how much engineers can do to make a difference. I still remember this one professor demonstrating medical equipment she was researching with her graduate students, aimed at improving motor control–it stuck with me. I’ve always loved biology and anatomy, and combining that with my favourite subject, physics, felt like the perfect fit. That’s what inspired me to pursue a dual degree in biomedical and mechanical engineering.

What is your favourite book, movie or TV show?

My favourite movie is Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. The storyline is engaging while the animation style and effects are very well done. My favourite book is Scythe by Neal Shusterman; it’s a great dystopian novel that I have read a few times.

Who do you look up to/admire and why?

I look up to Chris Hadfield whose videos I used to watch as a kid. His contributions to the Canadian Space Agency as an astronaut and engineer were crucial in the missions of which he took part. Furthermore, I look up to my parents and my brother who have inspired me to follow my passions.
