Q&A with Luis Delotavo
As someone who has always had a curious mind, I love how diverse engineering is. The sector is incredibly broad, and an engineering degree can often open doors to various other industries.

Why Western Engineering?
I chose Western Engineering because I was uncertain about the stream I wanted to pursue, and Western offered a wide range of disciplines along with a general first year. I initially wanted to pursue either Mechatronics or Chemical, but the general first year gave me more time to think about my focus. I ended up choosing software over the two options I initially had in mind. This choice turned out to be one of the best decisions, as software was a discipline I was more passionate about.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I stay active by cycling between playing basketball, going to the gym, and boxing. These are my favourite ways to stay fit, but I also enjoy other sports and physical activities. Additionally, I like watching movies and new TV shows. Currently, I’m in the process of watching One Piece.
What was your orientation week experience as a first-year student?
My orientation week experience was super fun. Moving away from home and not knowing anyone was intimidating, but the week gave me the chance to meet friends, explore campus, and attend enjoyable events. The friends I made during this time are life-long, and it eased my transition to living alone.
Why did you choose your specific stream of engineering?
I chose the software stream because I wanted to be part of a growing field with significant job growth compared to other disciplines. I also valued the remote work opportunities, as I’ve always wanted to travel the world and thought it would be a great way to work and explore. Additionally, I was interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence applications, and software offered a direct path to explore these topics.
What is your favourite book, movie, or TV show?
My favourite TV show is One Piece. I started watching it in grade 12 during the pandemic, and I’ve enjoyed it ever since. I look forward to new episodes and appreciate how unique the story and characters are.
Who do you look up to/admire and why?
I look up to and admire my mom because she’s the hardest-working person I know. Since I was little, I’ve seen her continuously work to provide for my sister and me, which has motivated and disciplined me to work hard as well.
