Q&A with Michael Ng
Western’s culture felt uniquely welcoming when I first toured campus and I have since met many great friends, professors and people here. I also appreciate the opportunity to pursue other programs alongside engineering, diversifying what I’m learning.

Why Western Engineering?
Engineering can be intense no matter where you are, but it’s much easier to find your footing with the help of a strong community. Western’s culture felt uniquely welcoming when I first toured campus and I have since met many great friends, professors and people here. I also appreciate the opportunity to pursue other programs alongside engineering, diversifying what I’m learning. Most importantly though, my mom scared me away from home. Just don’t tell her I said that. Please.
What do you do in your spare time?
Being surrounded by symbols and schematics starts to feel stifling after a while. I love burning time with friends, playing intramurals and working out helps keep me in balance, and walking aimlessly around London has led to many discoveries. I really enjoy great movies and music too. Many of my favourite artists and pieces have inspired me to take my own stabs at cinematography and songwriting, and they continue to lead me along.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I broke both of my ring fingers playing baseball when I was younger. I was extreme.
Study tips for current/future students
Try studying in different locations and times of day, with groups and alone (and feel free to keep switching it up). Organizing your schedule is important, but don’t let it distract you from sitting down and completing your tasks. Learning for understanding is more effective and fulfilling than consistently cramming for tests. Value your sleep and downtime. And don’t rely too heavily on others’ advice, but rather try it all for yourself and figure out how you personally work best.
Can you talk about your residence experience?
I stayed at Ontario Hall during my first year. On top of being a fun place to live, I remember they threw all kinds of events and cultural celebrations throughout the year and some of them really blew me away (I won’t spoil the surprises here, but it was a great time). Props to the kitchen, cleaning, and support staff. You can tell they care, and they put up with a lot. Better yet, the rumours are true – O-Hall has some of the best meals on campus.
