Discovery Western 2008

Kids attending the May 28 workshop constructed Lego robots.

Discovery Western (DW) and Western Engineering are giving kids the opportunity to “discover” the world of science and engineering this May to August. From the physics of flight, to bridge building to robots to the world of genetics and much more, children can gain a better understanding of the world around them, where things come from, and how they are made.

May and June workshops are already underway. Local elementary school-aged children were on campus Wednesday, May 28 to participate in the workshop “LEGO My Robolab,” which is one of six different workshops currently being offered. The session saw the kids work in teams to design, build and program real Lego robots, which they used to compete in challenges and games. About 20 children participated and had a great time working with DW staff, all of whom are Western Engineering students.

Over the 19 years that Discovery Western has held its Spring workshops, over
33, 000 kids have been involved. The activities are designed to focus on the scientific concepts that are outlined for each grade in the provincial curriculum, as well as to demonstrate the aspects of engineering that are associated with them.

DW also runs an exciting summer camp that is jam-packed with demonstrations, design projects, scientific and engineering challenges, group activities, tours and lots more.

Discovery Western is an award winning, not-for-profit organization, which aims to promote awareness of science, engineering and technology among young people, through an innovative and interactive learning program.
