CFI funding for Sabarinathan

The University of Western Ontario recently attracted a total of $1,656,566 for Canada Foundation for Innovations (CFI) funding grants. On March 27, 2006 CFI announced a total of seven projects at Western will receive funding under the CFI's new Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF), which has been designed to help Canadian universities attract and retain the best researchers.

Dr. Jayshri Sabarinathan from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was included in the seven projects. She will receive $166,126 for a photonic crystal based micro- and nano-sensors facility.

"This grant is vital in providing the infrastructure necessary to characterize photonic crystal based devices which are currently being designed and fabricated here at Western," explains Sabarinathan. "This facility will accelerate our work in developing practical nanoscale sensor applications and enable further collaboration with researchers in this area."

An independent corporation created by the Canadian government to fund research infrastructure, CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.
