The countdown is on...
There is a different feeling around campus these days. Faculty and
staff are starting to return from their summer vacations, Springett
Parking Lot is starting to get busier and students are starting to
appear in the hallways once again. This can only mean one thing -
another academic year is about to begin.
In
just a few short weeks, the 2005/2006 academic year will officially
begin. The Faculty anticipates over 300 first-year students will
attend Western Engineering this fall, bringing our total number of
undergraduate students to over 1300.
To
provide all of our students with the best student experience among
Canada's leading research-intensive universities, the Faculty
continues to grow and improve. This past summer alone Western
Engineering hired a number of faculty and staff members, so we can
continue to provide personalized attention to our students. Western
Engineering's newest members include:
-

Undergraduate Assistant (covering Rachel Dekker’s maternity
until June 2006), Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering ;
-
Denis M.
O'Carroll,
Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering;
-
Roi Gurka,
Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Materials
Engineering (anticipated start, September 2005);

and Public Affairs following a one-year contract.
Western Engineering is also looking forward to
welcoming:

September 6 in Career Services, replacing Michelle Prestwich as the
Student's Career Services Coordinator; and
-
several other faculty and staff, who
will be introduced in the September edition of
Engineering Now.
The
Faculty also continues renovation projects in the Spencer
Engineering Building to offer students up-to-date technology in the
classroom, a modern cafeteria in which to meet and relax, and a new Dean's
Office to welcome faculty, staff,
students, industry partners, alumni and friends. The renovations
continue to move along smoothly.
September will also be jam-packed with orientation events for
faculty, staff and students. Western Engineering's Undergraduate
Engineering Society (UES) is planning a fun-filled Orientation Week
2005. Some events include a Welcome BBQ Sunday, September 4 and
Monday, September 5 to introduce students to one another; an Faculty
Day Wednesday, September 7 for undergraduate students to meet professors, tour
Engineering and get to know their future classmates; an Engineering
party with Brescia College (Western's all female affiliate College)
Thursday, September 8; plus much, much more.
For
the year ahead, the Faculty is busy planning Distinguished Lectures
(all to take place Thursday afternoons from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm),
Research Day, student competitions, Faculty get-togethers and much
more.
Stay tuned to
Engineering Now for further Faculty information and
