Rockin in money for EWB

Engineering students are known across campus as being intelligent, hard working, OWeek pranksters. Who knew we could add “musicians” to the list?

Local bands including the Dead Know One Thing, the Elemeno Peas, the Righteous Pink (featuring UES' Federico Berruti) and the Ocho (featuring UES' Anthony Stracuzzi) performed at the Wave, to a crowd of more than 400 students, at the 2nd annual Charity on the Rocks Rock Concert.

The Rock Concert, organized by the UES to help raise money to fund EWB placements, raised approximately $3,000.

Samir Raza, VP Communications, EWB Western accredits the concert’s success to organizer Dawid Martyniak. “The show would not have been such a success without the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers - especially Dawid,” explains Raza. “It is events like these that inspire us to work even harder to promote Engineers Without Borders and human development.”

The concert was not only an opportunity to raise money for EWB Western; it was also an opportunity to raise awareness for EWB.

During the concert a large White Make Povery History banner was hung around The Wave, and Make Poverty History arm bands and pins were distributed to all attendees. Representatives from EWB spoke about their initiatives and also put together a skit about international development.

“This concert and other events of this kind raise a great deal of awareness about the important role engineers play in our society and abroad,” explains Martyniak. “These events also add a positive image to the engineering student body and the Undergraduate Engineering Society here at Western.”
