Western Engineering Students Make Their Mark at CFES Annual Congress

By Audrey Korol

Nine students represented Western Engineering at the Canadian Federation of Engineering Student’s (CFES) Congress held in Montreal from January 2-8, 2007. During the annual general meeting the direction of the CFES is set for the upcoming year, new officers are elected, and hosts for conferences and services are chosen. Several Western Engineering students made a strong impression at this year’s event.

Second-year engineering student, Kyle Ruttan, was elected new Vice President of Finance and Administration of the CFES. This is an exceptional accomplishment considering 34 schools from across Canada unanimously voted Ruttan to the executive position.

Each year, the CFES acknowledges three students whom the nation feels are strong leaders. This year, Western’s Computer Engineering & International Studies student, Bessam Mustafa, and Mechanical Engineering student, Goutom Datta, took home two of the three awards for leadership.

“A lot of hours go into extracurricular activities,” says Mustafa, VP of Communications for CFES. “It’s really motivating when you get acknowledged for your hard work; especially when it comes from your peers.”

Data agrees. “This award means a lot because our peers have recognized our efforts and our leadership qualities.” Data, who is also the UES President, knows first-hand about the valuable leadership skills one can gain from participating in extracurricular activities. “It’s not only important to get involved in these activities to gain leadership skills, but extracurricular activities also allow you to gain real-world skills and develop personal networks.”

At the Congress, it was also announced that Western Engineering has earned the rights to publish CFES’ national engineering magazine called Project Magazine.

“The publication is designed, written and published by students. It reaches approximately 55,000 undergraduate engineering students across Canada,” explains Mustafa, who is also the General Manager of Project Magazine. “Western has the privilege of hosting this magazine for the next two years, which means Western will be in charge of the direction and production of the magazine.”
