Lynda Shaw
Lecture
Friday, November 12
There was
standing room only when guest speaker,
Dr.
Maria Klawe, Dean of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science,
Princeton University, presented "Gender, Lies and Video
Games: The Truth about Females and Computing."
Klawe's talk explored the reasons behind the
relatively small population of girls and women in disciplines such
as Computer Science and Engineering. Dr. Klawe feels that with
attitudes and approaches that deal with gender differences in
learning styles and priorities, women will feel encouraged to enter
into these professions.

This lecture series is an annual event commemorating the memory
of Lynda Shaw, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student who was
tragically killed April 22, 1990 near Highway 401 on her way back to
Western to complete her third-year exams. Lynda Shaw's murder
is still unsolved.
