Homecoming 2007

Thousands of Western Alumni came to campus over the weekend of September 28 – 30, for a celebration of the past, present and future, during the 2007 Homecoming festivities. Western Engineering held several events for their alumni, including an open house reception and BBQ in the early afternoon, followed by an Alumni party at Chancey Smith’s in the evening. The evening event included the presentation of the L.S. Lauchland Engineering Alumni Medal to Boris Jackman ( BESc '72).

It was perfect BBQ weather on Saturday afternoon, for students, staff, alumni and guests to enjoy hamburgers outside while chatting with old and new friends. Visitors had the chance to look at several displays from extracurricular student groups. Guests came from far a-field to participate in the festivities.

Alumna Valerie Byrd (BESc ’04) brought her family all the way from Florida. In addition to her husband Kevin, who graduated from the engineering program at the University of Florida, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Anne and Bob, and Kevin’s grandmother Alice were along for the trip. While the Byrd’s said they were thrilled to be a part of Western Engineering’s homecoming activities, Anne, Bob and Alice were particularly excited to attend the annual Homecoming football game at TD Waterhouse stadium. All three are avid University of Florida Gator fans back home. No doubt the eventual drubbing of the Windsor Lancers by the Western Mustangs by a score of 49 - 0 only added to their fun.

Later in the evening many Western Engineering alumni congregated at Chancey Smith’s with some faculty and staff, to mix and mingle, and congratulate Boris Jackman on receiving his award. Western president, Dr. Paul Davenport joined the gathering to present Jackman with the award – named after L. Stuart Lauchland, the first professor to be hired and teach engineering science at Western in 1954.

Prior to the Homecoming festivities, Dean Berruti offered the following: “We are delighted that Boris Jackman has been selected as the recipient of the 2007 L.S. Lauchland Engineering Alumni Medal. This is the most prestigious alumni award presented annually by the Faculty of Engineering to a deserving alumnus to recognize his or her outstanding contributions through the advancement of engineering, business and the community. Boris has clearly excelled in all these areas, and I strongly believe that this award is truly deserved.”

Jackman, who is Executive Vice-President, Downstream with Petro Canada, joined the company in 1993. He has been an active volunteer, offering his leadership to such organizations as the Greater Toronto United Way Campaign, the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation, and to Western.

Next year’s homecoming festivities will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2008, so mark your calendars now and plan to attend!
