The Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) annual conference offers undergraduate chemical engineering students the opportunity to compete in a national design competition; the SNC-LAVALIN Undergraduate Plant Design Competition. Representatives from the top three finalist teams from across Canada are invited to attend and present their design projects at the CSChE Conference, every year. This year’s Conference was held in Ottawa, October 19-22, 2008.

One of Western Engineering’s 2007 Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Capstone Design teams, consisting of Suanne Mahabir, Karen Lenkiewicz and Luke M cIntyre, attended this year’s competition and won first place for their presentation, Manufacture of Polylactic Acid, biodegradable plastic from renewable sources.

The Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, in particular, are extremely proud of these students. Dr. Sohrab Rohani, Department Chair of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western expressed his appreciation for his student’s hard work by saying, “Our sincere thanks to Suanne Mahabir, Karen Lenkiewicz and Luke McIntyre for showcasing Western at a national level.”
