Engineering Student Off To Guyana
On September 22, Nima Rohani left Canada to gain
some real-world experience by volunteering with two youth
organizations in the country of Guyana. Rohani will be in Guyana for
the next eight months working with the Youth Can Move the World
Program and On the Wings of Words.
The Youth Can Move the World Program, in
collaboration with the Institute of Distance and Continuing
Education and the University of Guyana, develops workshops whereby
youth from across the country are trained on various crucial
topics such as literacy, gender equity, drug abuse, promotion of the
arts, AIDS, and so on. These youth are then sent out to their
individual communities to perform these same workshops with their
villages and towns.
On the Wings of Words is working towards
abolishing the problem of illiteracy in the country. Working
with organizations such as UNICEF and CIDA, it has been able to
reach over 10,000 youth since its inception in 1996.
Having started university a couple years early,
Rohani feels this is an incredible chance to gain some real-world experience which will allow him to finish his engineering
degree with a new-found vision.
