Two Western Engineering professors receive CRC appointments

The latest round of Canada Research Chairs were announced Thursday, September 13, 2007. Two Western Engineering professors were named as CRCs:

  • Cynthia Dunning (Mechanical and Materials Engineering) - As a Tier Two CRC in Orthopaedic Biomechanics ($100,000 annually for five years), Dunning leads studies aimed at improving musculoskeletal care through better understandings of load transfer and of artificial joint implants.

  • Xianbin Wang (Electrical & Computer Engineering) - As a Tier Two CRC in Wireless Communications ($100,000 annually for five years), Wang is designing future communications systems.

The Canada Research Chairs Program stands at the centre of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world's top countries for research and development. In 2000, the Government of Canada created a new permanent program to establish 2,000 research professorships—Canada Research Chairs—in universities across the country by 2008. The Canada Research Chairs Program invests $300 million a year to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds.

Chairholders advance the frontiers of knowledge in their fields, not only through their own work, but also by teaching and supervising students and coordinating the work of other researchers. For more information, please visit http://www.chairs.gc.ca/
