They're Back!
Ready or not, students are back
and classes are in session.

On Wednesday, September 8
approximately 380 first-year engineering students arrived at The University
of Western Ontario. UES kept the group very busy during their
first week with events such as a Welcome from the Dean, the Women in
Engineering Luncheon, an Engineering Extreme Challenge, the Bigger & Better Competition and Shinerama,
just to name a few.

2004 L.S.
Lauchland Alumni Award
Dr. Peter Castle has been selected as the winner of the 2004 L.S.
Lauchland Alumni Award to recognize his exceptional contributions to
the Faculty, the University and the overall Profession of
Engineering.
Dr. Castle will be presented with his award at the 50th Anniversary
Homecoming Dinner on October 2.

Canada Research
Chair Tier 1
Professor Dr. Jesse Zhu from the Department of Chemical &
Biochemical Engineering was been appointed Canada Research Chair
Tier 1 in Powder Technology Applications, effective May 1, 2004.

R.S. Jane Award
Professor Dr. Hugo DeLasa from the Department of Chemical &
Biochemical Engineering is the recent recipient of the prestigious R.S. Jane Award
for 2004. This award is the premier award of the
Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering. |

Rumbaugh Award
Alta Karpenko, a recent graduate from the Department of Mechanical &
Materials Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2004
Rumbaugh Outstanding Student Leader Award. The purpose of this
award is to encourage a vision within the recipient to become
an SAE leader during his/her adult career. As a recipient of
this award, Alta demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in SAE
activities (The Flying Mustangs) during her recent academic year at
Western. |

Large
Industrial Grants
Dean, Dr. Franco Berruti and
Professor Dr. Cedric Briens from the Department of Chemical &
Biochemical Engineering are joint investigators for two large
industrial grants. They received a total of more than $1 million for five years from Syncrude Canada Ltd. in support of Syncrude's
Reactor Utilization Program. In addition, Berruti and Briens received generous funding for two years from Dynamotive Energy Systems Corporation in support of their Biooil
Reforming Process. |

Research Cash
Ontario universities are being assured the Minister of Economic
Development and Trade will make good on $25 million originally
pledged to match federal research grants this year.

Standing Up To Hurricanes
As Hurricane Ivan ravages the Caribbean and heads to Florida,
building codes developed by Alan Davenport, professor emeritus of
civil engineering, founder/director of Western's Boundary Layer Wind
Tunnel, and a world expert on wind, almost two decades ago are once
again being put to the test.

Universities Fair
The 2004 Ontario Universities Fair will take place at the Toronto
Metro Convention Centre on September 24, 25 & 26. This year,
professors Cynthia Dunning, Tom Jenkyn, Jim Lacefield, and Michael Naish will accompany Jan
Shepherd McKee, Nina Lowes and Nancy Pottery of Undergraduate
Services. We expect to see approximately 40,000 students over

2004 marks Western Engineering's 50th Anniversary. To celebrate this
exciting milestone, please attend the Homecoming Events throughout

Committee as an opportunity to meet for informal conversation and

Connected
Career Fair
The Annual Connected Career Fair is taking place on Thursday,
September 30 from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm in Thompson
Arena. Company representatives (including some alumni) will be
on hand to talk to upper year students about job opportunities
and careers. The event is sponsored by Western Engineering, The
Richard Ivey School of Business, Administrative and Commercial
Studies (ACS) and The Faculty of Science. This year the
response from companies has been great and we are anticipating a
bigger and better event than in previous years.

Staff Organizational
Changes
Joan Tangen has assumed a position as a data management coordinator
in the Faculty's Research and International Relations Office.
You will be receiving a notice of her office hours in the near
future. Her temporary office (during the period of renovation) will
be SEB 2082. Joan will work with Acting Associate Dean, Dr. Hesham El Naggar
and with Glenda Ogilvie, in the Office of Research and International
Relations.
Susan Bock has moved to MME where she assumed the role of
Undergraduate Assistant and back-up to the Department Administrator.
She is located in the main MME Departmental Office.
Susan Marshall has taken on the Graduate Assistant role in MME. She
will continue to be located in the main MME Departmental Office.
