Pfizer Canada/Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Discovery Days
Friday, May 13
Since 2001, The Canadian Medical
Hall of Fame (CMHF) has partnered with Pfizer Canada and medical
universities across Canada to present Pfizer Canada Discovery Days.
These exciting one-day events allow high school students an
opportunity to explore careers in health sciences, including
engineering.
This year, the CMHF partnered with
the Faculties of Medicine & Dentistry, Health Sciences, Science, and
Engineering at Western, as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences &
Human Services at Fanshawe College. Approximately 300 high school
students from London and surrounding communities attended workshops,
a career panel, and the keynote lecture at Western Friday, May 13.
Engineering workshops included:
· Computer
Assisted Surgery – lead by
Dr. Jim Johnson, faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and
Materials Engineering
· An
Engineering Perspective on the Beating Heart
– lead by Dr. James Lacefield, faculty member in the Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering
· The
Aortic Heart Valve – lead by
Dr. Wakei Wan, Biomedical Engineering
· Human
Ear: How do we hear – lead
by Dr. Vijay Parsa, faculty member in the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering
Dr. Lauren Briens, faculty member
in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, took part
in the Women Panel discussion in the South Valley Building.
“The
girls were very enthusiastic about Discovery Days and asked
excellent questions at the career panel," says Briens. "I
think it was a very good opportunity for the students to be exposed
to engineering as I think many did not previously know what
engineering is and would have never associated engineering with
medical and health sciences. I think the students were also
encouraged to see women working in these areas that have been
traditionally males only.”
Next year will mark the 10th
anniversary of this event at Western.
