My research with the AFM group investigated the mechanisms responsible for the formation of hydraulic vortices at submerged intakes. The presence of a vortex at an intake can significantly compromise intake performance. Much
was already known of the dynamics of established vortices, however, little
had been published on the mechanics of formation. The role of inertial waves, vortex tube amplification, and gathering in the formation process
were also examined.
