Description We... offer MESc and PhD degrees that equip graduates with a solid grounding in biomedical engineering and its application to medical problems. Carry out innovative research at the frontiers of knowledge in biomedical engineering. In the initial years of the BME Program, research will focus on our strongest fields of interest: medical imaging and biomechanics/biomaterials. As the program develops in future years, research will expand into emerging fields such as biosensors and robotics. Program Context The context for a Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program at The University of Western Ontario is rooted in the many successful, collaborative, interdisciplinary teams currently engaged in biomedical engineering-related research at Western. The proposed Program has the potential to span departmental and institutional boundaries, bringing together diverse expertise to focus on common educational objectives and research problems A broad range of interdisciplinary faculty-researcher collaborations are active in several laboratories across campus: in the Faculty of Engineering, RRI, LHRI, SJHC and LHSC (University Campus), National Research Council Canada - London (NRC-London) and in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s clinical departments. Current research encompasses the fields of medical imaging, biomechanics and biomaterials. Individual scientists and interactive groups have made significant advances in image-guided prostate therapy and neurosurgery, cardiovascular and hemodynamic engineering, orthopedic biomechanics and biomaterials. Successful collaborations between clinicians and basic scientists have resulted in significant research funding, industrial partnerships, and publications in scientific journals. Many of these projects involve undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, and Medicine & Dentistry. Biomedical Engineering facilitates investigators working on biomedical engineering-related projects in different departments or institutions. The BME structure provides advanced and integrated training for students. The extensive course offerings complement biomedical engineering-related research projects performed by students. A fully accredited, cross-faculty, interdisciplinary BME Graduate Program will leverage and extend existing multidisciplinary links and provide the necessary breadth of knowledge for students wishing to pursue this exciting discipline. . |
