Western Engineering Professor Hanif Ladak’s Pioneering Work Featured in Vienna Medical History Museum

Western ECE Professor Hanif Ladak’s innovative research, in collaboration with Dr. Sumit Agrawal, was highlighted at Vienna's Josephinum Museum for its significant contributions to hearing science and ear surgery, combining advanced imaging technology with mathematics, biophysics, engineering, and neurotology.

ECE professor has received the 2023 is being recognized for his leadership in technology transfer in the areas of telecommunications network planning, orchestration and optimization and industrial Internet of things. He's is the first academic to be recognized by IEEE with this award. The R.H. Tanner Industry Leadership Award will be presented to Shami at the IEEE Canada Awards Gala at the 2023 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering in Regina later this fall.

Engineering prof Yimin Yang sees the pursuit of artificial intelligence as a long-distance race that everyone is running. “Every stakeholder is in the race, they’re just not sure what’s at the finish line,” he said. “Everyone is either interested or panicked about AI technology — or a mix of both.” Yang lives and works in the middle ground: He worries about the risks of artificial intelligence (AI), especially without more education on how to use it effectively, but he also sees the immense value. “We also have a duty to teach students to understand these topics. They are the future.
