John Makaran received his B.E.Sc. in electrical engineering (1987), M.E.Sc. in mechanical engineering (1990), and Ph.D. in electrical engineering (2002) from the University of Western Ontario. In a career spanning 30+ years, he has worked for 3M Canada Ltd., Husky Injection Molding Systems, Siemens VDO Automotive Inc., Fanshawe College, and General Dynamics Land Systems Canada. He has worked domestically and internationally in activities spanning product and process development, product validation, supplier quality issues, team and functional management. He was responsible for the electronics design of the world’s first brushless motor used for automotive engine cooling applications. He has taught at the College and University levels both for Western University, as well as within the M.Eng. program at the University of Toronto offered in conjunction with Magna’s Stronach Centre for Innovation. He has also acted as a consultant for Raymond EMC, Railveyor, Thermodyne Engineering, Teleflex GFI, WET Automotive, Standard Motor Products, and Magna International, and has also acted as an expert witness for Warner Norcross and Judd LLP on automotive sector-related issues.
