Professor
Ph.D., The University of Waterloo, 1995
M.E.Sc., The University of Western Ontario, 1992
B.E.Sc., The University of Western Ontario, 1991
Dr. Straatman is currently a Professor and Chair of the Mechanical & Materials Engineering department at Western University. Dr. Straatman received his B.E.Sc. and M.E.Sc. degrees, both in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Western Ontario in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo (Canada), which specialized in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Reynolds-Stress Turbulence Modelling.
After working in the software industry for Advanced Scientific Computing (now ANSYS), he took up a professorship at Western University in 1997 and moved through the ranks to full professor by 2010. Over the past 10 years, he has received multiple departmental, faculty and university teaching awards highlighting his accomplishments as an engineering professor; Dr. Straatman most recently received the Edward G. Pleva Award, Western’s highest award for excellence in University Teaching, in March 2007.
Dr. Straatman served on the board of directors of the CFD Society of Canada for 6 years, and then as president from 2012-2014. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) since 2016 and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) since 2024.
Dr. Straatman supervises a staff of graduate researchers and works mainly in two research areas. The first focuses on the enhancement of convective heat and mass transfer using porous metals, and the second focuses on the phenomena of energy transport in the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube.
