Western rated best student experience for ninth year

For the ninth year in a row, The University of Western Ontario received top marks in the category 'Most Satisfied Students' in The Globe and Mail's annual Canadian University Report.

In a survey of more than 35,000 undergraduate students, The Globe and Mail gave Western the only ‘A’ grade in that category, among large universities (more than 22,000 students).

Partial results of the 2011 Canadian University Report were published in a supplement distributed Monday, October 25, 2010 in The Globe and Mail. Of the 17 categories published, Western ranked first in nine categories, including Quality of Education and Quality of Teaching. They also tied for first in four, tied for second in two and tied for third in two.

“I am tremendously grateful to our students for clearly demonstrating that Western continues to provide the best student experience in Canada,” says Western President Amit Chakma. “As we continue our work to make it even better, our vision is that our students will carry the message to the world and Western will have increasing international impact. I also want to offer my thanks to all our faculty, staff and community members who together, create the best student experience.”

A new feature of the report, Working Knowledge, takes a career-focused look at the links between undergraduate degrees and employment, arranged by seven fields of study including Engineering and Technology. Western Engineering was ranked among the top schools in the areas of Quality of Education, Career Preparation and Labs and Equipment.

"Western Engineering was ranked among the leaders in all three categories within 'Engineering and Technology,' supporting our goal to provide the best student experience,” says Andrew Hrymak, Dean of Western Engineering. “Faculty and staff should take great pride for their efforts in providing a positive and rewarding experience for our students."

The report also features an article on “Where Canada’s big achievers went to school.” Using information from those who became Top 40 Under 40, they found that the highest number of Top 40 winners had undergraduate degrees from Western. Among those with MBA degrees, the highest numbers were from Western's Richard Ivey School of Business.
