  • O'Carroll receives $100,000 gift from the EJLB Foundation
    The EJLB Foundation has recently donated $100,000 in support of Civil and Environmental Engineering professor, Denis O’Carroll’s research project entitled, Developing Innovative Groundwater Remediation Strategies. (more)

  • Two Western Engineering professors receive Early Researcher Awards
    Engineering professors, Kibret Mequanint (Chemical and Biochemical Engineering) and Denis O’Carroll (Civil and Environmental Engineering), have been awarded Early Researcher Awards. (more)

  • Ontario Research Fund awards funding to five Western Engineering researchers
    The McGuinty government is investing $527 million over five years through the Ontario Research Fund. Through the Research Infrastructure Program of the Ontario Research Fund, five Western Engineering researchers will receive funding to obtain the tools they need to stay on the forefront of innovation, including lab space, equipment and computer software.   • Floryan selected as a Journal of Heat Transfer Outstanding Reviewer
    The Editorial Board of the Journal of Heat Transfer honours reveiwers who have made exemplary contributions to the Journal on a yearly basis. On the recommendation of the Associate Editors, J. M. Floryan, Department Chair of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, has been selected as one of this year's Outstanding Reviewers. Floryan will be honoured at the IMECE07 in Seattle, Washington in November 2007. (more)

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering student advances in IEEE Canada TELUS Innovation Award Competition
    From the 13 projects submitted for this year’s IEEE Canada TELUS Innovation Award Competition, 9 have been selected by a panel of judges from across Canada to make their final presentations in Edmonton September 14, 2007. Included in the top 9 is Western Engineering ECE416 Student (2006-2007), Marc Goulet. (more)

  • Aleks Essex, BESc '04 wins University Voting Systems Competition (VoComp)
    As a member of the Punchscan team, Essex won first place, and a $10,000 prize, at VoComp 2007. Punchscan is a voting system that allows voters to take a piece of the ballot home with them as a receipt.

  • Novel Protein Separation Technology developed by Chemical Engineering professors Amarjeet Bassi and Jesse Zhu is now being used by Soy 20/20
    Soy 20/20 is working with Western Engineering researchers Amarjeet Bassi and Jesse Zhu to adapt their novel protein separation technology for use in soy protein processing. The separation technology simultaneously adsorbs and then releases proteins using two inter-connected fluidized beds. Western's researchers are hoping the technology can be adapted for soy protein and protein sub-unit separation.

  • New centre to bolster alternatives to fossil fuels
    A new Bioindustrial Innovation Centre at The University of Western Ontario’s Sarnia-Lambton Research Park looks to develop environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels with a $10 million investment from the province. The new Bioindustrial Innovation Centre will connect researchers and the local petrochemical industry to create and commercialize new sources of clean fuel. (more)

  • Graduate Studies draft report
    The draft report of the Ad hoc Committee to review the Faculty of Graduate Studies has been available for information and comment by the university community since June. The committee has received many valuable comments during this period and welcomes further discussion. In order to maintain the schedule set for the committee's work and bring forward recommendations arising from the draft report to the Senate Committee on University Planning and the Senate in September, further comments and contributions to this discussion would be of most value if received before the Committee’s next meeting on September 4.

  • Staff Changes in Civil and Environmental Engineering
    Effective September 1, Cynthia Quintus will be assuming the role of GRC Coordinator in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. This is a promotion for Cindy who has been with Western Engineering since 2005 as the Undergraduate Assistant in the CEE office. Cindy has made significant contributions to the CEE Department during her time at Western Engineering. Most recently, she was the administrator with the key leading role in organizing the ERTEP 2007 Conference in Ghana, Africa with Dr. Yanful. This conference was a huge success. She has been a tremendous resource for faculty, staff and undergraduate students in the CEE Department; her responsibilities were always managed efficiently and professionally.

    Western Engineering has hired a temporary employee, Susan Calligan, to fill the position of Undergraduate Assistant in the CEE office.  Susan assumed Cindy’s previous role effective August 29.

  • Staff Changes in Undergraduate Services and ECE Office
    Effective September 1, Brigitte Heddle will be assuming the role of Junior Academic Counsellor in the Undergraduate Services Office. She will be filling in for Karen Murray while Karen is on maternity leave for the next year. As many of you know, Brigitte has been working in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department on a temporary basis as an Undergraduate Assistant since February of this year. Brigitte will be working closely with Karen over the next couple of weeks to ensure a smooth transition before Karen departs for her leave.

    The Faculty is also very happy to announce the return of Rachel Dekker and Sharon Ling to their Undergraduate Assistant roles in the ECE Department, on a full-time basis.

  • Dr. John Foreman, retired faculty member from Mechanical Engineering, passed away August 7, 2007
    At University Hospital on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, Mr. John E.K. Foreman passed away in his 86th year.
