One of Western’s own becomes a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada
By Nancy Quaegebeur
Dr. J.M. Floryan, Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in Western’s Faculty of Engineering, has recently been elected a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
Since 1963 the EIC has annually elected to the grade of Fellow a number of engineers in recognition of their excellence and their services to their profession and to society. There are a maximum of twenty EIC Fellows elected each year representing less than 0.1% of the combined membership of the twelve Engineering societies in the EIC group, making this a very rare and honourable distinction. Nominations are solicited from the affiliates of the member societies and sustaining members of the EIC. The HAF (Honours, Awards and Fellows) committee reviews the nominations and the EIC makes the final decision.
Dr. Floryan’s fellowship recognizes his work in fluid mechanics. He will be presented with his award at the Engineering Institute of Canada 2009 Awards Dinner Gala in Ottawa in March 2009. Dr. Floryan is also Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering, the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, the Science and Technology Fellow (Japan), the Humboldt Fellow (Germany) and the Senior NATO Research Fellow (France).
