Awards & Accomplishments
Tarlochan Sidhu, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer, will be inducted as Fellow of EIC for his exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada. Sidhu will be presented with this award at the Institute’s Annual Awards Banquet in Ottawa on March 3, 2007. (more)
Maciej Floryan, Department Chair, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, was recently awarded Fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). (more)
Nine students represented Western Engineering at the Canadian Federation of Engineering Student’s (CFES) Congress held in Montreal from January 2-8, 2007. During the annual general meeting the direction of the CFES is set for the upcoming year, new officers are elected, and hosts for conferences and services are chosen. Several Western Engineering students made a strong impression at this year’s event. (more)
A comprehensive new book on biosensors, edited by Western Engineering faculty members George Knopf and Amarjeet Bassi was published in January 2007. (more).
Research
Denis O'Carroll, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Ajay K. Ray, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, have both received funding from the ORF to help subsidize their operating, overhead and capital funding to support their leading-edge research. (more)
Western Engineering’s Three Little Pigs project works toward starting research in the spring. The project will focus on the effects of the elements on a test home erected on the site. (more)
Announcements
It just got a lot easier to find an answer to your computer-related questions at Western Engineering. Joel Eckert, the Faculty of Engineering’s newest staff member, recently joined the Information Technology Group (ITG) in early January as the Desktop Support Specialist. (more)
Western's community fundraising spirit has resulted in yet another win for United Way of London & Middlesex. Western's record-breaking total of $475,229 was announced Wednesday with great flourish during a 'Deal or No Deal' themed presentation featuring Howie Mandel-lookalike host Michael Brown and a line of silvery briefcases, compliments of Samsonite. All Western employees (including grad students) must have WHMIS training. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring their employees complete the training. Occupational Health and Safety now offers two versions of WHMIS training for Western employees – Comprehensive and Basic. Western Engineering members must complete the Comprehensive version, available on-line through WebCT Vista at https://vista.uwo.ca (The University of Western Ontario section).
The Book Store at Western is inviting faculty at Western to participate in the second annual Faculty Authors' Reception on March 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Book Store at Western, University Community Centre.
