Appointment of New Manager for University Machine Services (UMS) announced

Western Engineering is very pleased to announce that effective immediately, Doug Phillips will be assuming the role of Manager, University Machine Services (UMS), following the retirement of Robert Stuart.

Robert (Bob) Stuart has been an employee of UMS since 1981 and Manager since 1993. Bob has decided to retire early to pursue other interests and opportunities. In his 26 years of service to University Machine Services, Bob has provided unwavering support to the academic mission of The Faculty of Engineering. Bob had enormous drive and talent for developing and designing large and complex projects for the research affiliates of the University and his expertise in manufacturing will be greatly missed.

The successes of University Machine Services will, no doubt, continue under the new leadership provided by Doug Phillips. Doug has been working in UMS for the past 15 years; most recently as Technology Project Manager. Doug is a specialist in CNC programming and Rapid Prototyping. He has often been called upon to lead large projects for several research groups including: The Particle Technology Research Centre (PTRC), The 3 Little Pigs Project (now the IRLBH Project) and The Institute for Chemicals & Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR).

In the 1998/99 academic year, Doug was awarded with the Western Engineering Staff Recognition Award for his outstanding contributions to University Machine Services and Western Engineering. He went on to graduate from Western’s continuing education program with a Certificate in Leadership in 2004. In addition, Doug has been an invited guest lecturer in several labs and courses at the Faculty of Engineering for a number of years (most recently in MME 459b – CNC machining). He has also taught machining courses at Fanshawe College.

The Faculty of Engineering is confident in Doug’s leadership and management abilities and the future of University Machine Services is in good hands. Please join in congratulating Doug on his well-deserved promotion.
