Indigenous Engineering Logo
The Indigenous Engineering Logo beautifully integrates elements of nature and core engineering disciplines, reflecting Western University's commitment to diversity and inclusion within the Faculty of Engineering.
At the centre of the logo, a blazing fire burns brightly, surrounded by three distinct trees: a birch, a pine, and a spruce. These trees represent the three distinct groups of Indigenous peoples in Canada: First Nation, Métis, and Inuit, each embodying their unique traditions and contributions.
Encircling the fire and the trees, the logo is divided into four quadrants, each corresponding to an elemental force of nature and a core engineering discipline. The elements are not just natural phenomena but are the essence of engineering principles.
Air: Represented by the swirling winds at the top of the logo, air embodies the discipline of Mechanical Engineering. Just as air is in constant motion, so are the mechanical systems that drive innovation and progress.
Fire: The central fire symbolizes Electrical Engineering, channeling the energy and power of fire. This element captures the transformative and dynamic nature of electricity, igniting new possibilities and lighting the way forward.
Water: Water flows beneath the fire, representing Chemical Engineering. Water's fluidity and versatility mirror the complex chemical processes that sustain life and drive industrial advancements.
Earth: The solid ground on which the trees stand signifies Civil Engineering. Earth, the foundation of all structures, reflects the strength and stability that civil engineers bring to their creations, shaping the world we live in.
The circumference features the Iron Ring, symbolizing the dedication, ethics, and unity of the engineering profession.
Through this logo, we celebrate the harmony between nature and technology, tradition and modernity, and most importantly, the unity of diverse peoples working together to build a better world.
The logo is the result of thoughtful collaboration between Elder Liz Akiwenzie from the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and Oneida Nation of the Thames, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Western Engineering and designer, Hawlii Pichette
