Kareem Embaby - TAC Foundation Scholarship
Kareem Embaby, PhD candidate (supervisor - Dr. M.H. El Naggar) is the recipient of a TAC Foundation Scholarship from 407 ETR Concession Company Limited. The TAC Foundation Scholarship reviewers were particularly impressed by Kareem's submission. This is a recognition of the original and high quality research and its potential impact.
Kareem will be presenting his research work about “Three-dimensional numerical simulation of large-span soil-steel bridges” at the 2021 TAC Conference & Exhibition.
Osama Drbe - DFI Winner of 2021 Student Paper Competition
Osama Drbe, a PhD candidate, Geotechnical Research Centre, Western University (supervisor - Dr. M.H. El Naggar/cosupervisor Dr. A. Sadrekarimi), is the winner of the Student Paper Competition. His paper is titled, “Effect of Negative Skin Friction on Abutment Piles Design.” The paper discusses a comprehensive field monitoring program to evaluate the development of drag forces, which was conducted over four years for three instrumented abutment H-piles as a part of a three-span bridge project. Osama is presenting his paper on Thursday, October 13, 2021, during DFI’s 46th DFI Annual Conference on Deep Foundations being held October 12-15, 2021 in Las Vegas.
Dr. M. Hesham El Naggar - Elected New Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Engineering

The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which individuals, who have made outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada, provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada and to Canadians.
GRC Welcomes Dr. Bing Li
Dr. Li completed his PhD from MIT (2019) in the field of rock mechanics, and holds a BASc in Mineral Engineering (2013) from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Western, he was a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech, where his work was focused on the development and application of machine learning and physical models to detect, analyse, and predict mining/oil&gas induced earthquakes. He has also worked as a consultant on greenfield geothermal projects, as well as Total S.A. in geophysics.
His research interests include micro-earthquake monitoring and fracture imaging in rocks at the field scale of mining, civil, and energy applications, as well as using laboratory-scaled models. The goal is to develop data-driven approaches to understand and more accurately predict the onset of failure modes in rock mechanics problems such as rock bursts, slope stability and fluid-induced fault slip.
Ali Fallah Yeznabad - PhD Candidate Won First Prize at 2021 CGS Students Presentation Competition
Western Engineering PhD candidate Ali Fallah Yeznabad (supervisor Dr. M.H. El Naggar) won first place at the 2021 Graduate Students Presentation Competition. The event took place on January 20, 2021. His presentation was titled "Seismic Landslide Hazard Mapping for Greater Vancouver."
