A wet and wild Homecoming Weekend

Even rain couldn't damper the spirits of Western Engineering alumni as they attended the Faculty's annual Homecoming reception during the day and the Annual Alumni Dinner in the evening. At the dinner, Mr. Charles Ruigrok, BESc ’78, MESc ‘84, and Chief Executive Officer of Syncrude Canada Ltd., received the 2006 L.S. Lauchland Award. (more)
Awards & Accomplishments
The Western SAE Mini Baja 2006 season for was an eventful one. The rules of the competition changed drastically, requiring many new designs. One of the rule changes also involved the name change of the competition. From this point forward the Western SAE Mini Baja team will be named the Western Baja SAE team to reflect the change of the competition name. (more)
The PCI Student Education Judging Committee recently announced Western Engineering won fifth place in the overall championship and first place in the international zone for the Engineering Student Design Award (Big Beam Contest). This is an excellent improvement for Western as the team placed fourth in the international zone in last year's competition. (more)
Research
Professor Simonovic from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction presented a key note presentation on September 27 at the ‘3rd International Symposium on Integrated Water Resources Management’ in Bochum, Germany. The Symposium was organized by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences with the support of all major international water agencies. The main theme of the symposium was ‘Reducing the Vulnerability of Societies Against Water Related Risks at the Basin Scale.’ Dr. Simonovic talked about an innovative methodology for integrating objective and subjective risks in flood management.
Singapore has embarked on an ambitious research and innovation strategy and is backing up its plans with significant funding commitments. There are tremendous opportunities for Canadian research institutes, universities, or the private sector to leverage on Singapore’s research infrastructure and manpower. If you are looking for a committed research partner who has access to considerable funding and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, you might want to consider Singapore. (more)
The MITACS Network of Centres of Excellence hereby solicits proposals for scientific networking events (workshops, conferences, summer schools, short courses etc) that involve applications of the mathematical sciences to areas having a significant industrial, economic or social impact on Canada.
MITACS accepts networking proposals three times annually, on February 1, June 1, and October 1 of each year. Proposers are *strongly* encouraged to discuss their ideas with the MITACS Associate Scientific Director (asd@mitacs.ca) as early as possible, preferably at least three weeks prior to submitting a proposal. MITACS may also consider proposals submitted outside these deadlines, as funding permits. (more)

Announcements
Christina MacDonald to the Dean's Office. Christina joined Western Engineering September 25 as the Coordinator of Faculty and Staff Relations. Christina comes to us from The Richard Ivey School of Business where she was the HR Faculty Coordinator.
All Western employees (including grad students) must have WHMIS training. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring their employees complete the training. Occupational Health and Safety now offers two versions of WHMIS training for Western employees – Comprehensive and Basic. Both versions are available on-line through WebCT Vista at https://vista.uwo.ca (The University of Western Ontario section). (more)
The Internationally Trained Individuals Program through the Ministry of training, Colleges and Universities are running modules for New Canadians. One of the modules for engineers is Engineering Terminology. The London Unemployment Help Centre is looking for volunteers that would enjoy trying their hand at teaching.
