Discovery Western wins national award
Western Engineering News | February 25, 2016
Western University’s Discovery Western (DW) engineering outreach program has been awarded the 2015
Actua & GE Canada Award for Leadership and Innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
Actua is a featured sponsor of Western Engineering STEM outreach programs, having provided more than 20 years of support.
The award recognizes DW’s dedication to high-impact quality programs, ongoing leadership and supportive engagement of underserved youth within STEM fields.
Offered by Western’s Faculty of Engineering, DW is one of Canada’s largest science and engineering outreach programs for students between Grades 1-12.
DW attracted more than 750 students in their 2015 summer camp with hands-on activities focussing on innovation and exploring topics such as physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology, as well as civil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering.
In past programs, students have designed and 3D printed their own robots, built their own catapults, learned how to code, synthesized rock candy and programmed LEGO® robots.
DW’s reach goes beyond London, with satellite programs in Sarnia and Port Elgin as well as Indigenous communities such as Munsee-Delaware, Chippewa of the Thames and Oneida Nation.
Year-round programming reaches even more students by providing exciting, hands-on science in regional Ontario classrooms. In 2015, DW offered 110 workshops reaching nearly 3,500 students in more than 40 schools.
