On Jan. 8, Milad Nahavandi was one of 176 passengers on board Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 scheduled to fly from Tehran to Kiev. Nahavandi was part of Professor Charles Xu’s lab and was tasked with researching the process of converting sugar to chemicals, to be used in plastic.
