Herrera receives recognition for passion for teaching

A passion for teaching is what has earned an enthusiastic and attentive Western Engineering professor recognition from his colleagues.
José Herrera, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, is this year’s recipient of the R. Mohan Mathur Award for Excellence in Teaching. The R. Mohan Mathur Award for Excellence in Teaching is awarded annually to a faculty member to recognize their outstanding contributions to university teaching.
Herrera always receives outstanding teaching evaluations. High quantitative scores and written feedback demonstrate the excellence of his work. Herrera’s students describe his energy and enthusiasm for teaching as both challenging and engaging.
Herrera’s teaching philosophy highlights his encouraging teaching style. “My wish is for my students to walk out of my classroom with an improved self-confidence, believing and feeling that they are good students, on the way to becoming outstanding engineering professionals,” he explained.
His passion for all students to succeed is what truly sets him apart. Herrera was recently recognized by the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, as the 2015-16 recipient of the Maurice Bergougnou Teaching Excellence Award.
Herrera’s enthusiasm for student education is prevalent in everything that he does. He is a dedicated teacher and has built a positive reputation among students and faculty. His remarkable dedication has made a significant impact on his students.
Herrera will receive the R. Mohan Mathur Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Western Engineering Faculty and Staff Awards Lunch on June 22.
