Nine faculty members elected into Canadian Academy of Engineering
A notable nine Western Engineering faculty members have been named among 54 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), effective June 13, 2022.
The Induction Ceremony, which will honor the 2020, 2021 and 2022 elected Fellows, has been scheduled for June 27, 2022 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

- Sohrab Rohani, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
- Han-Ping Hong, Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Greg Kopp, Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Kibret Mequanint, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
- Moncef Nehdi, Civil and Environmental Engineering
- George Nakhla, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
- Hanif Ladak, Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Ken Coley, Mechanical and Materials Engineering
- Ajay Ray, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
Ken Coley, CAE Fellow and Dean for the Faculty of Engineering said, “I am thrilled about our Faculty’s success with CAE Fellowship nominations. It highlights the strength and contribution of faculty members to the profession and community and makes me proud to be the Dean of Western Engineering.”
Western Engineering holds the top spot in Canada for the highest number of CAE Fellowships awarded for 2021 and 2022. Last year, five faculty members were inducted into the CAE:
- Franco Berruti, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering
- Ashraf El Damatty, Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Hesham El Naggar, Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Jim Johnson, Biomedical Engineering
- Rajiv Varma, Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which individuals, who have made outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada, provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada and to Canadians. The CAE is an independent, self-governing, and non-profit organization established in 1987. Fellows of the CAE are nominated and elected by their peers, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service. Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering are committed to ensuring that Canada’s engineering expertise is applied to the benefit of all Canadians.
