Western Engineering Hosts National Conference on Diversity in Engineering
Western Engineering's Conference on Diversity in Engineering student leaders. (Submitted)
From November 22 to 25, 2024, Western University proudly welcomed 130 engineering students from over 30 educational institutions across Canada for the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students’ Conference on Diversity in Engineering (CDE). Organized by Western Engineering students, this event brought undergraduate engineers together to engage in meaningful conversations about equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDI+).
With the theme “Re-Imagining Engineering in the EDI+ Context to Enact Social Change,” the conference explored how technical skills can be harnessed to foster inclusive and impactful change. The event revolved around three core streams: Re-Learn, Re-Create, and Re-Engage, equipping participants with tools to rethink engineering practices in innovative ways.
Over 17 sponsor organizations contributed more than $60,000 in sponsorships, showcasing strong support from industry and community stakeholders. The conference provided attendees with invaluable insights into leadership development, stakeholder management, political engagement, institutional collaboration, advocacy on campus and in the workplace, and student governance.
Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and workshops led by accomplished speakers, participants were encouraged to embrace diversity and leverage it to tackle society's complex, interdisciplinary challenges.
Western Engineering is proud to have hosted CDE 2024, an annual student-led event dedicated to celebrating the variety of cultures, perspectives, and experiences within engineering communities. Together, the conference reinforced a vision of creating spaces that celebrate differences and inspire collaboration, positivity, and belonging.
