Western Engineering professor honoured with prestigious AIAA Energy Systems Award
Western Engineering is proud to announce that Ying Zheng, a renowned chemical engineering professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Chemical Reaction and Intensification, has been awarded the 2025 Energy Systems Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
Zheng recently received the award for her exceptional contributions to the field of energy systems, particularly her work on clean and renewable energy innovations. The AIAA Energy Systems Award recognizes individuals who have significantly advanced energy production, storage, distribution and conservation through their research and application.

Dr. Zheng's research has garnered international recognition, earning her several prestigious awards and distinctions throughout her career. Her pioneering work in applied catalysis has led to innovative solutions that address global energy challenges, promising long-term environmental, economic and social benefits.
Among her notable achievements, Zheng has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles and holds 10 patents. Among her groundbreaking achievements, she has developed innovative methods to reduce sulfur in gasoline and diesel and has pioneered the production of drop-in biofuels, which have been adopted by major industries to promote cleaner fuel production. Her recent research efforts on CO2 conversion and hydrogen production has paved the way for more sustainable energy processes.
A dedicated mentor and advocate for women in engineering, Zheng has guided over 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. She has also played a key role in promoting gender equity in STEM fields through various leadership positions and initiatives.
