Engineering Now is Western Engineering's new internal newsletter. This newsletter will be issued to all faculty and staff via email on the first and third Monday of every month .

Awards & Accomplishments

Alumni Award of Merit Recipient
Alan Macnab BESc‘72 was recently announced as the Professional Achievement award winner by the Alumni Awards Committee.  Alan will be honoured at the Homecoming Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday, October 1st.

The Annual Engineering Award Banquet was held on Thursday, June 17th at the Westhaven Golf & Country Club.

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Annual Conference
Jeff Nocent and Lisa Feldman, grad students from Civil & Environmental Engineering, were recognized at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Annual Conference.

Formula SAE 2004 Competition
The Western Engineering Formula SAE racing team placed 86th out of 134 teams at the 2004 competition in Detroit, Michigan.

Environmental Design Competition
One of Western Engineering's capstone design teams won the judges special selection category in the Environmental Design Competition in United Arab Emirates.  Congratulations to the following team members: Alex W. Hansen, Beverly Nollert, Natalie R. Addis and Siu Y. Chau.

American Control Conference
Harman Bassan, a doctoral student co-supervised by Dr. Moallem and Dr. Patel received a best paper presentation award at the American Control Conference in Boston on June 30th.  Harman's award winning paper was titled: Real-Time Vibration Control of an Industrial Manipulator Mounted on a Compliant Base.

Simonovic Seeks Flooding Solutions
Slobodoan Simonovic, Research Chair in Civil & Environmental Engineering, is helping to design a new international mechanism for coping with ever-increasing damage and loss of life caused by flooding.

Dunning Researches Replacement Joints
Cynthia Dunning, Assistant Professor in Mechanical & Materials Engineering is working with a team to develop better replacement joints (implants) for the human body. She is researching how implant characteristics, such as shape, affect their fixation within the body. Loss of fixation is one of the main reasons for revision surgery on artificial joints.

Parsa Studies How Bats Use High-Frequency Sounds to Adapt to Environments

With $154,079 in new funding from CFI, Vijay Parsa will establish a
Laboratory for Advanced Digital Signal Processing Research at Western.

The new inter-disciplinary facility will facilitate research projects
ranging from audiological device development, machine condition
monitoring, sympathetic nerve discharge analysis, and bat vocalization
analysis.

Discovery Grants
Sixty-six researchers in the Faculties of Engineering, Social Science, and Science have been awarded Discovery Grants totaling $9,319,714 by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for 2004.

News & Events

Picnic in the Park
Please join us for a picnic in the park on Friday, September 3rd at 12:30 pm in Weldon Park, Arva to welcome new faculty, staff and graduate students.  All food and beverages are complimentary (subsidized by the Social Committee and the Dean's Office).  A bus has been arranged for those without transportation.  It will leave from SEB at 12:15 p.m. and return at 3:30 p.m.  Please bring a lawn chair.
 
Frosh Orientation Faculty Day
September 8th is Frosh Orientation Faculty Day.  UES has planned for their annual events, including the Women In Engineering luncheon in the afternoon.
 
Shinerama Bus Pull
This year, the Engineering students have decided to stray from the Shinerama ‘norm’ and will attempt to pull an eight-ton bus (motor home) around a three hundred-meter circuit to raise money for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event will take place on Saturday September 11th  from
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon in the Zeller’s parking lot (Masonville Mall).
 
Innovation: Beyond Technology Exhibition
The 50th Anniversary of Engineering at Western exhibition, called "Innovation: Beyond Technology" will open on Thursday, September 16th at 1:00 p.m. (the Dean's Hour) at the McIntosh Gallery. The Exhibition will showcase current research in the faculty and inform the public about the many areas in which Engineers not only create and improve technology, but also improve our lives.  If there are faculty members who would still like to be involved, please contact Jan Shepherd McKee at

Connected Career Fair
The Annual Connected Career Fair is taking place on Thursday, September 30th from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm in Thompson Arena.  Company representatives (including some alumni) will be on hand to talk to upper year students about job opportunities and careers.  The event is sponsored by Western Engineering, The Richard Ivey School of Business, Administrative and Commercial Studies (ACS) and The Faculty of Science.  This year – the response from companies has been great and we are anticipating a bigger and better event than in previous years.

 

New Grad Recruiting and Career Fair Workshops
These
workshops are organized by Engineering Career Services for third and fourth year students interested in learning more about the New Grad Recruiting Program and how to market themselves at the Connected Career Fair.  Workshops will be held on Thursday, September 16th from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm; Monday, September 20th from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm; Tuesday, September 21st from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm; and Wednesday, September 22nd from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm.  For additional information contact Michelle Prestwich at x81154.

 
Spencer Engineering Building Renovations
There will be renovations to SEB from August 24th - December 20th 2004.
The renovations will include some shutdowns during the demolition and rebuilding phase.

Water Shutdown in Thompson Engineering Building
There will be a shutdown of the domestic hot & cold water in TEB on Wednesday, September 1st from 7:00 am -8:00 AM to test the backflow preventer for the building. This will affect the entire water supply to the building.
 
Meteoroids Conference At Western
Close to 100 astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmo chemists, space physicists, engineers and others were in the Spencer Engineering Building from August 16th - August 20th for the Meteoroids 2004 Conference.  The week long conference included presentations from Western's Meteor Physics Group, including a presentation from Alan Webster, Electrical and Computer Engineering. 
   
Engineering Golf Retreat
The 2004 Engineering Golf Retreat took place at the Fox Golf Club on Friday, June 25th.

Engineering & Medicine Collaboration
The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry have joined forces....again!  Starting September 2005, the Schulich School of Medicine will reserve 3 designated spots for Western Engineering students specifically.

NSERC-University Faculty Award Recipients
Western Engineering congratulates
Jayshri Sabarinathan and Lindsay Anderson on being Western Engineering's most recent NSERC-University Faculty Award recipients.  Jayshri held a limited term appointment in Electrical & Computer Engineering since last September and as of July 1 began her probationary appointment.  Lindsay Anderson joined Civil & Environmental Engineering us a probationary faculty member, also on July 1, 2004.
