Dr. Mohit P. Mohanty finished his Ph.D. from the Indian
Institute of Technology Bombay, India in 2019 under the supervision of Prof.
Subhankar Karmakar and Prof. Subimal Ghosh. His thesis entitled “A
comprehensive mapping of flood risk in changing climate: An application to
Jagatsinghpur District, Odisha” focussed on developing generic frameworks
for estimating and mapping the current and future flood risk through a
combination of statistical approaches and hydrodynamic flood modeling.
During his Ph.D. research tenure, he was a part of two other urban flood
related projects on (i) Near real time flood forecasting for Mumbai city
and, (ii) Design of an Expert System for Flood Forecasting and Management
for the city of Chennai.
His research expertise and interests include Design
rainfall analysis, flood risk estimation and mapping, hydrodynamic flood
hazard modelling, flood vulnerability mapping and geomorphic analysis for
flood management.
Prior to this, he completed his Bachelors in Civil
Engineering from the Institute of Technical Education and Research, India in
2011 and Masters in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of
Technology Guwahati, India in 2014.
Dr. Mohanty is currently a Post-doctoral Fellow at FIDS working under Prof. Slobodan P. Simonovic. His research is focussed on evaluating the existing federal flood mapping guidelines and implementing appropriate flood-plain zoning over Canada using various publicly available data sets under various land-use and climate change scenarios.
