The Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion is Western’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certified building on campus. The $20-million, 45,000 square-foot building houses research on green technologies, processes and materials and, at the same time, the building itself will feature advanced environmentally sustainable construction technologies and methodologies.

The Centre for Environment and Sustainability was established to meet the growing need to support interdisciplinary environmental research efforts from all areas within the physical, life and social sciences. The group was formed to encourage and develop joint environmental research projects not only among Science and Engineering faculty, but to increase their partnerships with other faculties, institutes and government agencies.

Western’s Chemical Reactor Engineering Centre (CREC) is a research and consulting laboratory that develops new reactor technologies in close collaboration with the industrial sector. The CREC was founded by Dr Hugo de Lasa in 1988 and has rapidly become one of the best reactor engineering labs in the world, recognized internationally as a centre of expertise and innovation in new chemical reactor technologies and ideas.

The Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC) conducts geotechnical and related interdisciplinary research with industry partners. Western has a strong geotechnical program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The faculty members forming the Geotechnical Research Centre, together with associates and adjunct faculty members, are investigating a range of challenging geotechnical and geoenvironmental problems such as soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation design, geoenvironmental engineering, tunnels, underground structures, dams, soil improvement, soil and foundation dynamics and earthquake engineering.

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) is a world-class centre for multi-disciplinary disaster prevention research and communications. ICLR was established by Canada’s property and casualty insurance industry as an independent, not-for-profit research institute affiliated with The University of Western Ontario. Institute staff and research associates are international leaders in wind and seismic engineering, atmospheric science, risk perception, hydrology, economics, geography, health sciences, public policy and a number of other disciplines.

Officially launched in July 2008, the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Research (ICFAR) aims to promote environmental protection by addressing global problems such as energy deficits, pollution and waste. Spearheaded by professors Franco Berruti and Cedric Briens of Western’s Faculty of Engineering, this institute was created to enable the research and development of renewable energy sources, fuels and chemicals, with a focus on the optimal use of wastes to produce them.

The Particle Technology Research Centre was established to combine the efforts of researchers at Western working in the broad area of particle synthesis, characterization, handling, and processing. PTRC excels as a centre for cutting-edge research at national and international levels, and strives to be a leader in Ontario in providing comprehensive and cost effective analytical services and enhancing particle related research through partnership with industry.
