November 22, 2024 @3:00pm: Thompson Center Symposium Series: Leader Character in Engineering Projects Zoom

The Thompson Center for Leadership and Innovation invites you to its first Speaker Series seminar featuring Dr. Mary Crossan (Ivey Business School). Dr. Crossan will present “Leader Character in Engineering Projects”—exploring the critical role of leader character in engineering education and practice.

October 5, 2023 (12:00-1:00 pm @ACEB 1450): Thompson Fellow Public Lecture

Open source started with software, but hardware has a role in its present and future. What does open source mean when applied to hardware? In this talk, Alicia Gibb Seidle, founder and executive director of the Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA), traces the rise of open hardware, defines what it means, and offers her outlook on what’s ahead. From tractors to healthcare, the open hardware future is bright.

 

November 16, 2023 (12:30-1:30 pm @ACEB 1410): Integrated Engineering Speaker Series

Hear from our recent alum, Colin Bryan, about young engineers working in the consulting and finance world, and how the Integrated Engineering program at Western has prepared him for success. Colin received the John M. Thompson Award for Engineering Leadership and Innovation in 2023 for his integration of engineering and business skills on multiple projects during studies and internship, including co-founding and winning start-up funds for Homeable (whose mission is to design and build affordable, rapid, and modular, small home communities on Indigenous reserves through relationships with both the federal and provincial governments). Come learn how our recent alumnae, John Vergeer and Natalya Whitla, made the most out of the Western Engineering and the IE program experience, leading to a successful transition into the workforce after graduation. Both John and Natalya receive a special recognition this year for their Excellence in Engineering Leadership and Innovation. Both Natalya and John contributed greatly to the student community on campus, including Engineers Without Borders, Western Univeristy Chapter, winning grants and managing complex projects. John and Natalya both graduated from the Integrated Engineering + HBA dual degree program, with relevant summer internships. Natalya was also a recipient of the Linamar Scholarship, and an EWB Junior Fellow in 2020.

Our esteemed guest speaker for this academic year's Engineering Leadership Seminar is Marilyn Spink, an award-winning engineer with 25+ years experience in delivering complex mine development projects throughout the world. Come learn what it means to put engineering leadership and integrated engineering into practice to benefit society.

Western Engineering students build lifeline footbridge for rural Eswatini community

This past summer, three Western Engineering students traveled to Eswatini, contributing their skills to improve access for a rural community to schools, healthcare, farmland and employment. Their mission? To design and construct an 83-metre-long suspended footbridge that would change the lives of thousands. Click Here
